The valley at the southern end of Mu Gia Pass was interlaced with roads, storage areas, and caves. Numerous antiaircraft artillery (AAA) and automatic weapons (AW) defended the area. The FACs nicknamed this region the "Dog House." Two main roads, Routes 12 and 23, carried southbound traffic out of Mu Gia Pass.
