Route
12 led west from the Dog House. The
road intersected Route 8 from
Nape
Pass
and continued to Thakhek on the Laotian bank of the
Mekong
River
. Route 12 was important for two
reasons:
Route
12 linked traffic from the
Nape
Pass
with routes leading toward
South Vietnam
.
Route
12 carried westbound traffic.
Westbound
traffic did not threaten American forces in
South Vietnam
. The westbound supplies, however,
were important in the ongoing war between the Communist Pathet Lao and the Royal
Laotian forces. The North Vietnamese
controlled all but the last 15 miles of Route 12.
The road would be important if the Communists ever decided to fight their
way to the
Mekong
River
. Since the American aircraft based
at NKP were less than 10 miles from the western end of Route 12, the FACs
regularly watched Route 12.
