ADSIDs on an F-4

The picture included the following notation:  F-4 ADSID Delivery Capability—Sensors mounted on Multiple Ejector Rack. (Photo of 25TFS Acft Taken December 1969.)

U.S. Navy Squadron VO-67 deployed with 12 OP-2Es to Nakhon Phanom Royal Thai Air Force Base in the fall of 1967.  Their assignment was to fly along the Ho Chi Minh Trail at 300-500 feet to deliver sensors for McNamara’s Wall (the Igloo White program).  That wasn’t a survivable mission, and VO-67 lost three aircraft and 20 crewmen in January and February 1968.  Some tactics were changed and eventually the delivery mission was given to USAF F-4 squadrons, which could fly faster and were more maneuverable between targets.

Though the simulated tree branches of the detectors looked out of place on the Multiple Ejector Racks, the F-4 proved to be an accurate and survivable delivery vehicle.
