Red Horse Results – In Progress
Clearing away the dense jungle, Red
Horse construction teams build rows of barracks to house the growing number of
airmen needed to support the deployment of combat aircraft to NKP.
I’m surprised at the density of the jungle as much of NKP seemed less
dense, and we flew over a number of rice fields between the airfield and the
Mekong River. However, I guess we
were spoiled since so much of the undergrowth had been cleared with a few
trees left making the area seem more like a natural forest than jungle.
I believe the road/ditch angling
across the lower right edge of the picture is NKP’s main north-south road
and is near the same point where the next picture was taken some months later.
I believe this picture was provided
by Lt Col Robert Johnston, the first commander of the 23rd TASS in
the spring of 1966.
