New Construction – NKP 1966
This early picture shows a
very busy time for the Red Horse Construction Troops. This picture was taken from above the main parking ramp and
looking East-Northeast. The light
aircraft parked in the lower left corner are facing away from Laos on the main
parking ramp. The wider road-like
cleared area angling from the bottom to almost the upper-left corner of the
picture is destined to be the FAC parking ramp.
The picture of NKP in 1966 that I divided up showed just a bit of the
southern end of that parking ramp. The
white-looking aircraft parked there looks more like a Beaver than a Bird Dog.
No PSP has been put in down at this point.
Mostly trucks are parked there now.
After the PSP was set the length of the parking ramp, most Bird Dogs
parked on the close end and a few were parked beyond the road intersection.
Our squadron pickup usually sat near that intersection, and we drove
east on the road from the parking ramp out to the main road to head north
toward the personal equipment building.
Across the upper right part of the picture, NKP’s
main street runs parallel to the Bird Dog parking ramp. The large building parallel on the far side of Main Street
might be the CBPO. I used to
visit that CBPO fairly often when I served part time as Squadron Admin
Officer, and I remember it being on the east side of the main road somewhere
in that vicinity. Again, I
believe this picture was provided by Lt. Col. Johnston.
