Final Mission in a Bird Dog
Captain Page Stanley celebrates
after returning from his final mission as a Nail FAC in an O-1 Bird Dog.
23rd TASS Commander, Lt. Col. David Pallister has brought
the champagne. Major Dale Sommers
and the SSgt who’d blocked in the aircraft share the celebration.
The picture shows the relative
size of the O-1. You also can see
the Perforated Steel Planking relied on at the remote bases. When I arrived at
NKP in February 1967, our actual runway was made of thousands of these
interlocking planks. A more
advance steel planking replaced the PSP runway during the spring of 1967.
