Flight Line at Takhli in the Early Years

KKE 19131 - F-105 Thunderchiefs of the U.S. Air Force onthe Flight line at Takhli AB, Thailand.  Dec 1965.

U.S. AIR FORCE PHOTO

Thirty F-105 Thunderchiefs sit wingtip-to-wingtip, which makes me think a little of P-40s on Hickam AB, Hawaii on December 7, 1941. It appears that new ramp space is under construction beyond the aircraft.  I count about 10 aircraft that have been repainted to the camouflage design we’re used to seeing in most of the photos of F-105s in the War in Southeast Asia.  I was told by a veteran Thud driver that the extra drag of the paint reduced the F-105s top speed by about 40 knots from the speeds attainable with the bare metal.

Thanks for the PIX to peek at Jimmie - memories just flooded back - all those F-105's were probably in and out of Yokota at one time or another - they came in silver birds - went down South, came back cammy painted, and riddled with duct tape, sans most all the electronics. The boys at Yokota ran an F-105 Hospital Ward and sent 'em back HEALED to SEA. . .
