Pave Eagle
Initially, the EC-121R, Super Constellations, were
fitted out to receive the electronic signals transmitted by the Igloo White
Sensors deployed by the OP-2Es of US Navy Squadron VO-67.
Orbiting over safe areas near the Mud River portion of the Ho Chi Minh
Trail, the BatCats picked up the signals, processed some, and forwarded
information to the Interdiction Surveillance Center (ISC) at Nakhon Phanom.
As the ISC’s capabilities increased, the requirement for airborne
processing of the information decreased. Under a project known as Pave Eagle,
the small Beechcraft took over the role of an airborne relay aircraft, thereby
releasing the BatCats from the operation.
