We left Thare in the rain and arrived at Nakhon Phanom beneath dreary, low clouds in early September. These conditions were reminiscent of those I encountered on 15 April 1967 when the monsoon engulfed the entire Mekong Basin. Imagine trying to find a remote grass airstrip under this ceiling along with torrents of rain reducing the visibility to about a quarter of a mile. Note: This tower alongside the River View Hotel carries power lines across the Mekong River to Laos, another sign of the changing times.
